Naver’s online shopping service adopts an artificial intelligence system to simplify customer reviews

SEOUL — Using an artificial intelligence-powered service, South Korean e-commerce giant Naver will help shoppers easily access simplified versions of customer reviews. Long and complicated reviews will be simplified to one or two sentences to speed up purchases.

Online reviews play a vital role in South Korea’s online shopping industry, which was worth approximately 16 trillion won ($13.9 billion) in 2020. According to a 2017 survey of Of 1,200 consumers aged 19-49, conducted by market research firm Embrain, around 78.6% always checked customer reviews before buying a product online.

Naver said it released “Ai Review Summary,” a customer review service based on the company’s hyperscale artificial intelligence (AI) language platform “Hyper Clova.” Hyperscale AI uses massive computing techniques to process big data and cloud computing at lightning speed.

Hyper Clova would analyze, categorize and filter the keywords included in online reviews and display simplified and summarized versions. “Phrases will be grouped together and created into a single, natural-sounding sentence,” Naver said in a July 30 statement. Hyper Clova offers review summaries for some 4.4 million products listed in Naver’s “Furniture & Interior” category. Reviews of other products will be simplified by Hyper Clova in the future.
